Cigarette vending machines are totally out of order!

The BHF is leading the campaign to put cigarette vending machines out of order for good.

Smoking is a leading risk factor for heart disease. Even so, hundreds of young people under 18 take up smoking every day.

The BHF wants to reduce the number of young people who are putting their health at risk. To help do this, we want to see an immediate ban on the sale of cigarettes from vending machines.

It is against the law for anyone under 18 to use these machines but:

-In Scotland one in ten 13 to 15 year olds who smoke get cigarettes from vending machines

-In England and Wales we estimate that as many as 46,000 children get their cigarettes from     vending machines in England and Wales.*

-In Northern Ireland we estimate that there could be over 1,500 11-15 year olds accessing their cigarettes through vending machines.

Together we can get a ban brought forward. Help our campaign today!

To make it harder for children and teens to get hold of cigarettes, I back the call for a ban on the sale of cigarettes through vending machines.

*This is a BHF calculation using the latest available data regarding vending machines from Smoking, Drinking and Drug Use among Young People in England 2006 (a report by The National Centre for Social Research and the National Foundation for Educational Research) and mid-2006 population estimates. It is assumed that trends in smoking amongst young people and children are similar in England and Wales.
